SURFSUP / PRODUCER RESOURCES

Keep
creating.

Working documents and small frameworks for the parts of production that aren't the beat itself — ownership, delivery, and staying organized.

Split Sheet — who owns what

Before a session gets emotional, get the split down in writing. At minimum, capture: every contributor's legal name and role (producer, writer, topline, etc.), the percentage each person is claiming, publishing info (PRO + IPI/CAE number if they have one), and everyone's signature or written confirmation. Do this the same day the record is made — memories get fuzzy, feelings don't.

Stem Delivery — a clean handoff checklist

Before you send a session out: name files consistently (e.g. ARTIST_TITLE_BPM_KEY_STEM.wav), export at the session's native sample rate/bit depth (no down-sampling), include a rough mix reference bounce, zero out unused MIDI/automation, and bounce stems from the same start point so everything lines up in a new session without hunting for offsets.

Metadata Kit — release-ready notes

Have this ready before a release goes out: full credit list (producer, writer, mix/master engineer), ISRC code, songwriter PRO affiliations, and a one-line description of any sample clearance status. Missing metadata is the #1 reason producer credits get dropped or delayed on DSPs.

Sync Prep — before you pitch a placement

Sync supervisors move fast and skip anything incomplete. Have ready: an instrumental, a "clean" (radio-edit) version, stems, and a one-sheet with BPM, key, mood tags, and instrumentation. Organize all four in one folder per song before you ever send a pitch.

Prioritize your week — a simple framework

When everything feels urgent, sort what's actually in front of you into four buckets before you touch a DAW:

1. Finish, don't start. Anything 80%+ done goes first — unfinished sessions are dead weight until they're closed out.
2. Deadline-bound. Anything with an actual date attached (a pitch, a deliverable, a submission window) goes next.
3. Momentum work. New ideas, loops, one-shots — the creative refill. Protect time for this even when it feels less "productive."
4. Admin. Splits, metadata, file organization, invoices. Batch this instead of letting it interrupt sessions.

Work the list top to bottom. If something doesn't fit a bucket, it's probably not actually urgent yet.
